Do I need a lawyer if my divorce is uncontested?

Yes, we recommend letting us assist you with your divorce even if it is amicable. There are many financial details to be worked out, and all of them must be set down in accordance with South Carolina law. Our attorney Scott Sprouse is a Certified Family Court Mediator who works with you and your spouse to draft an agreement that will be accepted by the family court judge. If your petition for divorce is rejected because you tried to do it yourself, you will end up spending more money getting it right than if you had engaged our firm from the beginning.

How long will it take for my divorce to be complete?

The process can be lengthy, taking anywhere from three months to three years, but we do everything we can to move it along. As of June 1, 2011, people filing for divorce in South Carolina are required to go through mediation prior to having a divorce trial. However, due to recent budget cuts in the state court system, no new courts will be added to accommodate this additional step. You need a lawyer with the local experience to get you a hearing promptly and move your case efficiently through mediation.

How much is my divorce going to cost?

Stoudemire & Sprouse understands the financial strain of a divorce, and we use your time and money effectively. Since you are paying for our services by the hour, we avoid unnecessary processes and get straight to the point in court. In our experience, an uncontested divorce can be handled for as little as $2,500. Contested divorces often cost $10,000 or more, so we work hard to resolve your divorce efficiently. Our goal is never to draw out your case, but rather to bring you closure as quickly as possible.
